How to schedule a sale on Shopify (with prices that revert automatically)

Running a sale on Shopify sounds simple: lower some prices, then raise them again when the sale is over. The catch is the timing. Doing it by hand means logging in at the right moment to drop prices, then remembering to put them back — often late at night or on a weekend. Miss the end of a sale and you keep selling at a discount you never meant to offer.

The manual way, and why it bites

Shopify lets you edit a product's price and its compare-at price directly, so you can create a sale by hand. But nothing schedules it. You have to be there to start it, and there to end it. For a single product that's manageable. For a collection of fifty, across a weekend, it's a chore that's easy to get wrong.

Schedule the sale instead

A scheduled-sales app like SunDial lets you set the whole thing up in advance. You pick what's on sale and when, and it handles the start and the end for you.

  1. Pick what's on saleChoose individual products, or a whole collection. SunDial snapshots the collection's membership when the sale starts, so later changes don't disturb a running sale.
  2. Choose the discountA percentage off, a fixed amount off, or a fixed sale price — whichever fits the promotion.
  3. Set the start and endPick the date and time the sale should begin and end. That's the part that usually trips people up by hand.
  4. Save and walk awaySunDial applies the discount at the start time and restores your original prices at the end. No alarms, no late-night edits.

What happens when the sale ends

Before the sale starts, SunDial records each product's original price. When the end time arrives, it writes those exact prices back. Because it changes the product price directly, the sale shows on your storefront without customers entering a discount code — and the rollback is just as automatic as the start.

SunDial is free on the Shopify App Store. Schedule your first sale in about two minutes.

Frequently asked

Does Shopify let you schedule a sale natively?

Shopify lets you edit prices and compare-at prices by hand, but it doesn't schedule the start and end of a price sale. A scheduled-sales app handles the timing for you.

Do customers need a discount code?

No. SunDial changes the product price directly, so the sale price shows on your storefront automatically — no code required.
