Percentage off, amount off, or fixed price: which discount to use on Shopify

When you set up a sale, the first decision is how to express the discount. SunDial gives you three options — a percentage off, a fixed amount off, or a fixed sale price — and each suits a different kind of promotion.

Percentage off

A percentage applies the same proportion to every product, whatever its price. '20% off' takes more off a $100 item than a $10 one, which keeps the discount feeling fair across a varied catalog. It's the natural choice for storewide or collection-wide sales like Black Friday.

Fixed amount off

A fixed amount — '$10 off' — takes the same cash value off each product. It lands best when your products are priced similarly, and it reads as a bigger deal on lower-priced items. Watch it on cheap products, where a flat amount can cut deep into margin.

Fixed sale price

A fixed price sets every product in the sale to the same number — 'everything $29'. It's perfect for clearance tables, bundles, and doorbuster deals where a round price is the headline. Because it ignores the original price, use it on a group of products that belong at the same price point.

  • Storewide or mixed-price sale → percentage off.
  • Similarly priced products → a fixed amount off.
  • Clearance or a headline price point → a fixed sale price.

All three discount types are built in — and every sale reverts automatically. SunDial is free on the Shopify App Store.
